Rudy Project Nytron helmet and Astral Sphere glasses: The days are getting longer and warmer (in the northern hemisphere), so now is the best time for some new kit for the summer. First up are two articles we need and that’s a helmet and sunglasses: Rudy Project’s Nytron aero helmet and Astral Sphere sunglasses.

Just ‘wow’
Last year I reviewed the Rudy Project Rebel helmet and the Rudy Project Astral X Super-Lightweight glasses and they served me very well through the 2025 summer. Earlier this year Ruddy Project presented the Rudy Project Performance 40, which is modern version of their wrap-around glasses of 40 years ago. This reminded me that I had a pair of them in the mid 80’s. The Italian glasses company were not too keen on sending me pair of the new 3D-printed titanium framed version at €950, understandably. But they did suggest I have a look at the Astral Sphere glasses and the Nytron helmet.

I admit I wasn’t as cool as Moreno Argentin was back in 1987
It’s always nice to receive new kit, but I have to admit I did let out a ‘wow!’ when I opened the box with the near ice white Nytron helmet matched with the white gloss Astral Sphere frames with purple lenses. Just a great look… But how do they perform?

Rudy Project Nytron White Matte Helmet
Alastair Hamilton PEZ sez:
Strangely this is the second helmet from Rudy Project that has fitted me right out of the box, without any adjustment, how do they do that?. Talking of the fit, which of course is personal, the Nytron is an aero helmet and so is not bulky. It feels like it hugs your head, comfortably and reassuringly. On the first ride I knew I was wearing a helmet and that is probably due to all the padding (and my lack of hair), there are pads on all the contact points which gives a reassuring feeling of safety. The Nytron doesn’t have MIPS, but it is EN 1078 certified and passes WG11 rotational impact tests, so the safe feeling is not unfounded. After about half an hour I had forgotten I was wearing it.
Aero and comfortable
The Nytron is an aero helmet and so doesn’t have a lot of ventilation holes, but the ones it does have are big. The air if funnelled in through the two large front and side gaps, then passes over and round your head and out the back. I thought I might over heat, but all was good in 25 to 30ºC, I’ll get back to you in the summer when it gets up to 40ºC. How aero is the Nytron? I’ve no idea, but I didn’t feel any slower than normal. You can also slot your glasses into the front holes, which is very welcome as there is nothing worse than not having somewhere to put them on a ride if conditions turn dull.

Aero, but out of place
As I said, there is plenty of padding next to your head, slim and not bulky but should absorb sweat and any road vibration. The Nytron is held in place by a thin black band that runs from the temples back to the tension adjuster at the back of the head. The silver dial tensioner hight at the rear can be moved up or down to suit your head. The adjuster is on a ‘Y’ band with a head shaped section to stay in place with comfort. The straps are a light grey colour as are the under the ear adjusters, the solid buckle is black. I didn’t have to adjust the fit, but it’s as easy as any other helmet.

Lots of padding
The Nytron is Rudy Project’s aero race helmet as used by the Bahrain Victorious WorldTour team, but it doesn’t look out of place at the cafe. On the ride the Nytron stays in place, no slipping forward or back or wobbling about. I particularly like the subtle ‘Rudy Project’ in grey/silver on the sides, that and it is a compact helmet not bulky. At just over 250 grams it weighs in at much the same as most top end helmets, but it is reasonably priced at a little less than its competitors. It also comes with a nice bag. Comfort and safety is what you get and definitely Italian style and class.

A big vent at the rear
The Nytron comes in two sizes for men and women: Small/Medium to cover 55cm to 58cm and Large/XL for 59cm to 61cm and in nine different colours. More info HERE.

Good enough for Bahrain Victorious
Rudy Project Astral Sphere White Gloss – ImpactX 2 Laser Purple Glasses
Alastair Hamilton PEZ sez:
White framed glasses with a white helmet (and white shoes, of course) is pure style, even if the rider isn’t WorldTour level. My white framed Rudy Project Astral Sphere sunglasses came with ImpactX 2 Laser purple lenses which are photochromic. The full package has a real sharp look.
Everything looks better through purple
Starting with the frame, which is not really a frame, but a pair of legs and a nose piece with the one piece lens attached to the legs. The nose-piece is detachable and has very adjustable soft rubber nose pads to grip your nose and optimise there position on your face. The legs also have rubber inserts for extra grip and the legs are softer at the ends for comfort. The lens itself has spherical shape for better peripheral vision. Rudy Project say that: “Its curvature reduces optical distortion while improving depth perception and spatial awareness—key advantages in fast, technical environments.” That all sounds plausible, but basically stuff looks really clear and there is no light coming in from above, below or the sides of the lenses.

Soft and hard case
The lens is probably the most important part of a pair of glasses, the Rudy Project Astral Sphere are available with either a Photochromic or Polarized lens. Mine are the ImpactX Photochromic in purple, so they change depending on the brightness of the sunshine, I’m sure you have seen or own a pair and know exactly what they do and they do what they are expected to do. The purple shade makes everything look good, clear and sharp. I also noticed that they don’t mist up, even going from a cool outside into a warm cafe.

Style and comfort
The Astral Sphere glasses feel well made, especially the leg hinges which have a solid ‘clunk’ when you open them. They are really comfortable and look great, you can’t ask for anything more. As always with glasses for cycling, try them with your helmet as they don’t always fit together, there was no problem with the Nytron/Astral combo. The glasses come with a soft bag and a hard case made with 75% pre-consumer recycled leather and reduced plastic content, and for some reason my cat won’t leave the case alone. The hard case gives your glasses the best chance of surviving being crushed in a travel bag.

Just the lens for changing light conditions
The Rudy Project Astral Sphere glasses come in nine different colour combinations. More info HERE.
