A new study published by Ontario By Bike provides detailed insight into cyclists’ riding habits and trip preferences, highlighting the fact that cycle tourism in Ontario is growing and making a valuable contribution to the tourism economy in the province.
The report sheds light on a number of key trends in Ontario cycling activity, including the most popular types of cycling participation (recreational cycling followed by cycle touring and event participation), cycling style (a preference for off-road trails and road cycling), and a trend towards increasing ride distances (a larger number ride between 46km to 99km).
From the survey conducted in 2025, Ontario cyclists shared:
- 52% did one or more overnight trips that included cycling in Ontario, including 35% that did two or more trips.
- 65% did three or more day trips in Ontario that included cycling in 2025.

Supporting tourism in areas visited, and the over 1,700 businesses certified as bicycle friendly by Ontario By Bike, 45% of cyclists visited one or more of these certified businesses that welcome cyclists. Accommodations and food and beverage are where cyclists spend the largest.
The age of cyclists varies, as 45% of cyclists are aged 45 to 64, 37% of cyclists are over 65, 17% are under 44. With 36% stating they frequently ride with a group or cycling club, the most frequently cited trip planning resource was recommendations from trusted sources including ride friends and family, followed by a number of other info sources and websites, including the resources published by Ontario By Bike.

Looking ahead at the coming cycling season, e-bikes continue to grow in popularity, with 28% already owning one or more in their household, and 16% considering a purchase in the near future. There is also an increased demand for taking bikes on public transportation, with 42% who stated they did so in the past two years. Cycling events remains popular with 41% of cyclists participating in two or more events in 2025 (recreational/community and charity/fundraisers found to be the most popular).
With an increasing number cycling during the winter and 66% who ride all year long, expect to see a continued increase of cyclists on trails and roads across Ontario not only this summer but year-round.
